VW decided that it would be a good idea to sell the MKIV Golf for a few years after it was replaced by the MKV. They called it the Golf City. Why did they do this instead of bringing over the Polo? Fuck if I know!
They did the same to the Jetta.
Literally all theydid was slap on somme slightly different headlights and taillights, that’s it.

Regulations and the cost of certification. They had already run the A4 chassis through the process.

Manufactures do this from time to time. Malibu classic comes to mind, Nissan sells both the current and previous generation patrols, in fact the outgoing g37 (q50) and new g37 with a stupid name (q70) are being sold along side each other right now

It’s my understanding this was to get rid of excess stock. There was no chance of selling these next to the new ones with a marginally lower sticker. There are a few other differences beyond the lights. These were absolute strippers and sold very cheaply. This allowed an aggressive ad campaign that brought potential buys from other brands.

I wrote about the long lasting history of the MK4 Jetta in Mexico.
Up until 2015, you could buy yourself a 2.0 mk4 Jetta.

MKIV Jetta is the best looking of them anyway. Better to keep it around for a bit longer (especially if they fixed some/all of its gremlins)
